Marwan Bassiouni

Marwan Bassiouni is an artist and photographer. His most recent projects contribute to the representation of Islam in the Western landscape while exploring the documentary qualities of the photographic medium.

Bassiouni developed an interest in photography at the age of 23, after working and living on a mountain top in the Swiss Alps and taking pictures of the landscape with his mobile phone. Shortly after, he decided to leave his hotel management studies and work as the assistant to a still life photographer while following classes at the Photography School of Vevey. Three years later, Marwan performed his civil service as a documentary filmmaker and photographer in the media department of a human rights NGO in Geneva. This experience led Bassiouni to develop an interest in the journalistic, ethical, and political aspects involved in photographic representation. In 2012, Bassiouni received a grant and moved to Cairo, Egypt to study the Arabic language and begin his first photography projects. After returning to Switzerland, Bassiouni then decided to study at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague, Netherlands.

Marwan holds a BA in photography from The Royal Academy of Art (KABK) and a photo...
